Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Tiny blood vessels that are visible beneath the surface of your skin are known as spider veins. Because the vessels are connected in an intricate network, they look a little like a spider’s web, hence the name.

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins occur when blood doesn’t flow freely, and instead pools within the blood vessels. This causes the walls of the tiny veins to expand so they become larger, darker, and easier to see under your skin.

Spider veins don’t always have an apparent cause. Some conditions that are known to contribute to spider veins include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Age
  • Occupations that require a lot of standing

Genetics probably contribute to the formation of spider veins, as they tend to run in families.

What is the Cutera laser system?

Cutera® is an advanced laser system that safely treats spider veins. The experienced providers at Advantage Women’s Care use the focused laser energy to destroy and break apart the tiny blood vessels that make up spider veins.

The damaged veins are eventually eliminated by your natural immune process, making the results of your spider vein treatment permanent.

Do laser spider vein treatments hurt?

The Cutera laser has a special cooling system so you won’t feel the laser’s heat. Most people don’t find laser spider vein treatments to be uncomfortable. However, if you have very sensitive skin, you can request that your Advantage Women’s Care provider apply a topical anesthetic cream before beginning your treatment.

There’s no downtime following laser spider vein removal treatments, so you can return to your daily activities right after your appointment. You might experience some mild redness or swelling around the treatment site, but this should go away in a day or two.

How many spider vein removal treatments do I need?

After your initial consultation, your Advantage Women’s Care provider creates a customized treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals for treatment. Usually, a series of 4-6 treatments are needed for optimal results.
